Brain Images Reveal the Secret to Higher IQ
New research suggests that the layer of insulation coating neural wiring in the brain plays a critical role in determining intelligence.
A fascinating article not so much about intelligence itself but about DTI, or diffusion-tensor imaging, a new type of imaging that shows the diffusion of water molecules within the body, and especially the brain.
With DTI, researchers found that myelin, the fatty layer that coats the neural pathways in the brain, is an important factor in the speed of neural connections and, therefore, intelligence. They found that it’s not necessarily the grey matter but the conductivity that, well, matters.
