Fiction Best Sellers on Library Journal – Last week of May

The fifteen most borrowed books in US Libraries as of 31 May (fiction only). I find this list much more revealing than best sellers lists based on books ordered (not sold) by bookstores (e.g. NY Times Best Sellers List) or books sold by independent booksellers. Here, there is no money exchange, so reading does not depend on one’s ability to spend money on books.

More fun with numbers

I lifted this from a website I stumbled upon. Made me laugh:

What Makes 100%?

What does it mean to give MORE than 100%? Ever wonder about those people who say they are giving more than 100%? We have all been to those meetings where someone wants you to give over 100%. How about achieving 103%? What makes up 100% in life?

Here’s a little mathematical formula that might help you answer these questions:

If:

A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z is represented as:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26.

Then:

H-A-R-D-W-O-R-K is

8+1+18+4+23+15+18+11 = 98%

and

K-N-O-W-L-E-D-G-E is

11+14+15+23+12+5+4+7+5 = 96%

But,

A-T-T-I-T-U-D-E is

1+20+20+9+20+21+4+5 = 100%

And,

B-U-L-L-S-H-I-T is

2+21+12+12+19+8+9+20 = 103%

AND, look how far ass kissing will take you.

A-S-S-K-I-S-S-I-N-G is

1+19+19+11+9+19+19+9+14+7 = 118%

So, one can conclude with mathematical certainty that while Hard Work and Knowledge will get you close, and Attitude will get you there, it’s the Bullshit and Ass Kissing that will put you over the top.

Fun with numbers

I’m a writer. This means I mostly use the right side of my brain, and numbers have never been of the slightest interest with me. In fact, I pretty much hate them, from one to a googleplex and beyond.

Some people, however, love them. They love them enough to find what’s unique about them such as this:

Consider an n-digit number k. Square it and add the right n digits to the left n or n-1 digits. If the resultant sum is k, then k is called a Kaprekar number.

Kaprekar? Sounds like a name I’d use for a planet. Hey, I might even use it, even if I don’t understand what the definition means.

A New Look

I had to choose another look for my blog, because of a WordPress update that made the theme I was using obsolete. There are hundreds of new themes to choose from, but I decided on this one because it’s a very similar green to the one I had before, and I’m stressed right now so I wanted something calming to look at.

The new WordPress functionalities will take a while to set up to my taste, so please be patient if you don’t find things you did before. They’re all going to be put back.

In the meantime, I’d appreciate comments on the new look. Love it? Hate it? Indifferent? Enquiring minds would like to know.
