NaNoWriMo 2006- Day Four

Day three wasn’t as productive as I’d hoped, but still I wrote over 2,000 words, which exceeds the daily requirement to meet the 50,000 words challenge. Made a mistake in my post yesterday, as well, about the title. Meter Dreams was the one I had started when I was in the North Channel, but it wasn’t going anywhere. The title contest I ran during BAFAB netted me a title and an idea, which I decided to use for NaNoWriMo.

Title? Meter Parents

Here’s a –very rough– excerpt:

(Jack is on the phone with Winston)

“I have a problem you may be able to help me with. This morning around seven, a newborn appeared in my bed. Problem is, he didn’t stay a newborn. Now he looks like a six year old. He’s growing every time I blink. Do you have any idea what this kid is and what I can do to get rid of him?”

I heard wheezing at the other end and realized Winston was laughing. I’d never heard the sound before. “Oh, dear,” he said. His voice was considerably cheerier. “You have yourself a Phoenix.”

“I really, really don’t like the sound of this. Do you mean what I think you mean?”

“What, that the kid will grow to adulthood by the end of the day, blow up, then come back as a baby tomorrow morning? Yep. That’s what I mean.”

“The species is harmless. They’re quite loyal to their keepers.”

“So are poodles. How did he get here?”

“Someone dumped it on you, obviously.”
