I found this cool website, Things People Said, a collection of funny quotes and sayings garnered from ordinary people who don’t always weigh their words, whether it’s orally or in writing. Particularly funny are the Kid Quotes, all sayings from kids showing how they take language literally, and how linear their thinking is. One of my favorites:
“Well, sometimes I say something mean to my brother, but I feel really good inside. Does that mean I’m a hypocrite?” — 7 year old girl, after a Sunday School teacher explained that a hypocrite was someone who says one thing but feels something else.
It reminds me of a story my mother tells. My little brother (16 months younger than me) kept waking up and crying. Mom would go into his room and there I would be, stroking him and imitating her when she soothed him. She thought it was cute until she caught me red-handed. I’d go into my brother’s room, pinch him hard enough to make him cry. I’d wait to hear my mother’s steps and then would fake the soothing part.
Talk about passive agressive. I have learned, since then, to express my anger in a more productive manner.
